A game in progress gives guests a natural reason to stay for one more round instead of leaving the moment their plates are cleared. A match has a beginning and an end — guests tend to want to see it through.
Time at the table is the biggest lever for a second drink or dessert. Guests who are engaged and comfortable are more likely to order something extra than guests who are just waiting to leave.
"Good food" is forgettable. "We had a table tournament and our table won" is not. Giving guests something memorable to talk about is what turns a visit into a review or a story they tell their friends.
